Eight Limbs


Ashtanga Yoga, the Eight Limbs:

Yamas – ethics, described as abstentions

Niyamas – discipline, described as observances

Asanas – discipline of the body, postures as methods to keep the body disease-free and full of vital energy

Pranayama – breath control

Pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses

Dharana – concentration upon a physical object (such as a flame, or the center of eyebrows)

Dhyana – meditation

Samadhi – the crown of meditation, complete absorption
